Snow unit (week 5) January 29-February 2)

Week 5
Books This Week:
Stella: Queen of the Snow
The Snowy Day

Concepts for the Week:
-How does snow melt?
-How can we keep snow from melting? (insulation & refrigeration)

Small Groups For This Week:
-Snowglobe letter game.  We will look pull a letter out of a bag.  Then we will identify and label the letter.  We will search in a snowglobe for the letter.  When we find it, we will use a Qtip to apply white paint with glue on it. Then we will sprinkle glitter on the letter. This is to strengthen our alligator fingers.  
-January Self Portraits
-Exploring Different Size Mittens- We will cut and place mittens in size order
-”Subtracting” Snowman- We will take turns rolling a number cube.  We will label the number we land on then count that many objects.  Then we will take one object away.  Then count the set again to show how we “subtract” and then we will record our numbers on our papers.
-Stella in the Snow- We will be creating snowy scenes with a story character.  Then we will paint on Epsom salt.
-Snowman bowling- We will build a snowman using white blocks.  Then we will roll a “snowman” to knock it down.  We will take turns building the snowman for our friend to have the next turn.  
Journaling- We will write in our journals about snow

Handwriting
We will be continuing a program called Handwriting Without Tears. Its focus is on letter formation and letter awareness. This program reinforces proper grasp and trying to strengthen fine motor muscles. We will continue to work on diagonal lines.  We will be sorting and coloring our papers to find the letters A and V.
